Multiple Teeth Replacement Options San Francisco, CA

There are multiple tooth replacement options that a dentist can use to replace missing teeth. Most will lose at least one of their teeth over the course of their lives, and these teeth must be replaced to preserve dental health. Living with missing teeth can lead to issues like bone tissue loss, poor teeth alignment and increased self-consciousness about the way you look.

Here are multiple tooth replacement options that a dentist might explore with a patient while looking for a solution for their missing teeth.

1. Dental implant

Implants are one of the most popular ways to replace missing teeth, and there are a number of reasons that this is the case. Implants help prevent the bone tissue loss that takes place when a tooth falls out, and they do not need any specialized care.

Implants are inserted in the jaw, where they fuse with bone tissues around them. This keeps them stable so they can be fitted with various restorations, like crowns, bridges or dentures. It can take up to six months for dental implants to fuse with surrounding bone tissues.

2. Dentures

Looking for the most affordable way to replace missing teeth? Dentures are the way to go. Getting fitted with dentures does not require making any permanent alterations to the patient’s teeth. An impression is simply taken and sent to a dental lab where dentures are made. It can take up to two weeks for the patient’s dentures to get back to the clinic.

3. Bridges

Bridges are used to fill up spaces created by missing teeth. Traditional bridges are attached to the two teeth closest to the gap. These teeth are called abutments and are usually covered with crowns to make them stronger. The artificial teeth that bridge the gap are called pontics and are typically made out of porcelain.

4. Implant-supported dentures

Implants and dentures represent two extremes when it comes to replacing missing teeth. Implants provide the most benefits but they are the priciest approach. Dentures are known for poor stability, but a full set of dentures can be cheaper than the cost of a single implant.

Dentists can fix that issue by combining these two oral prosthetics. The patient’s dentures are attached to implants so they do not shift in the mouth when worn. There are also special implant-dentures that are permanently fixed in place when installed.

5. Implant-supported bridges

Implant-supported bridges provide a longer-lasting type of bridge. Instead of fitting the two teeth closest to the gap created by missing teeth with crowns, the dentist installs implants at the end of the space and attaches crowns to them. These then serve as abutments for the artificial teeth.
