At-Home Teeth Whitening Treatment Provided by a Cosmetic Dentist

Teeth Whitening San Francisco, CA

Teeth whitening is the most common, most popular procedure that cosmetic dentists perform. It is a non-invasive procedure that removes mild to moderate discoloration. There are two types of teeth whitening treatments that cosmetic dentists offer: in-office and at-home.

With in-office teeth whitening, a cosmetic dentist will clean the patient’s teeth before applying a teeth-whitening agent onto their teeth. The agent is usually administered with the help of a well-fitted dental tray. The dentist may activate the agent by exposing it to a light beam of a specific wavelength.

The process can take anywhere from half an hour to 90 minutes, as the patient waits for the whitening agent to take effect. Sometimes, a patient will have to repeat the process several times for better results.

At-home teeth whitening: Its benefits and its drawbacks

DIY teeth-whitening is far more convenient than multiple sessions at the dentist, but the results are not as good as professional teeth whitening. So, dentists have come up with a compromise that allows patients to enjoy the best of both worlds, specifically:

  • The convenience of at-home teeth whitening solutions
  • The affordability of DIY teeth whitening kits
  • The great results of professional teeth whitening

Dentists administer at-home treatments to the patient and provide a detailed set of instructions. A cosmetic dentist will send the patient home with a teeth-whitening kit after a demonstration on how to use the kit. They will set up follow-up appointments to track the progress of their patient’s treatment.

Here is the step-by-step process of at-home teeth whitening under the supervision of a dentist.

The evaluation

It is always a good idea to seek a dentist’s professional opinion before whitening teeth. A dental evaluation will tell the dentist whether a patient is a good candidate for teeth whitening. If the dentist finds underlying dental problems like cavities, injury or gum disease, they will ask the patient to wait until their teeth are healthy enough for teeth whitening. If the patient is in good oral health, the dentist proceeds to the next step.

Preparation of dental trays

The main components of a professional teeth whitening kit are a dental tray and a whitening agent. For at-home teeth whitening to work perfectly, the dental trays must be custom-built to fit the patient’s teeth like a glove.

This means that the dentist has to take a mold of the patient’s teeth for the fabrication of custom dental trays. The dentist will then send the impression to a dental lab and wait for the finished product. If the dentist has an in-house lab, they will fabricate the trays themselves in a matter of hours or minutes.

Dispensing of the professional at-home whitening kit

Once the custom teeth trays are ready, the dentist will call the patient in. Here is what happens during this appointment:

  • The dentist reminds the patient to brush and floss before they use the teeth whitening kit
  • They demonstrate how to dispense the whitening agent into the teeth tray
  • They instruct the patient on how long they need to keep the teeth trays on and emphasize the risks of keeping the trays on for too long
  • They will also remind the patient to stay away from food and drink while the teeth trays are on the teeth, and for 30 minutes after the trays come off
  • Lastly, the dentist will advise the patient on how to clean the teeth when the dental trays come off

The follow-up appointment

After one or two weeks, the dentist will check on their patient’s progress. By this time, the teeth are usually white, and there is no need to continue the teeth whitening routine.
